Once upon a time, I dreamed of writing and illustrating a book that would inspire children to use their imagination and find joy in their own creativity rather than constantly seeking outside stimulation for entertainment. I have always loved children's literature and have collected many much-loved stories over the years, so this was natural for me, or was it? As an artist, I had a vision in my mind of the colorful characters and magical scenes I wanted to create, but I faced a dilemma—I wasn't an illustrator. I also had no idea where to start, how to publish, or even what size the book should be. I knew it would be challenging but determined to bring my vision to life. I began by researching and studying various illustration techniques, styles, and methods. I delved into books and online resources, seeking inspiration and guidance from experienced illustrators. Then I found The School of Visual Storytelling SVSlearn.com. They offered a 12-week course on writing and illustrating a children's book, and I jumped right in. This online school provides many beginner and advanced classes on illustrating and how toos to publish a book. They also have a podcast, "3Point Perspective," which offers excellent listening information.
After gathering knowledge and inspiration, I started practicing tirelessly, sketching and drawing daily to hone my skills. I sought feedback from fellow artists and professionals, constantly striving to improve and refine my craft. It was a challenging and sometimes frustrating process, but my passion for the project kept me going.
Eventually, through dedication and perseverance, I began to see my illustrations evolve and take shape according to my vision. Each stroke of the pencil, each splash of color, brought me closer to creating the enchanting world I had envisioned for my book.
As I delved deeper into the world of illustration, I also found mentors who provided invaluable advice and constructive critique, helping me grow as an illustrator. With their guidance and my unwavering determination, I gradually gained the confidence and skill necessary to bring my characters and story to life on the pages of my book.
Finally, after countless hours of hard work and unwavering dedication, I completed my book – a vibrant, whimsical world filled with imaginative characters and captivating narratives. With the turn of each page, I hoped to ignite the spark of creativity and imagination within every child who reads it, inspiring them to find joy in their imaginative pursuits.
The journey from aspiring artist to self-taught illustrator was challenging, but the experience filled me with a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. I have discovered the power of determination, passion, and creativity and am now ready to share it with the world.
